Prevenzione della carie dentaria e della malattia parodontale durante la terapia ortodontica fissa

Objectives: This work describes the most frequent risks related to fixed orthodontic treatment (i.e., caries and periodontal disease) and how to prevent them. Materials and methods: The authors reviewed the most recent literature regarding the relationship between fixed appliances, dental caries, and periodontal diseases in orthodontic patients. The most useful preventive systems were analyzed as well. Results and conclusions: The risk of caries and periodontal disease is higher in orthodontic patients with fixed appliances. The prevention of these pathologies relies on a thorough oral hygiene, periodic applications of fluoride and/or chlorexidine (varnishes, mouthwashes, sprays, etc.), and regular supervisions by the oral hygienist and the orthodontist.
