Assessment of the capacity of control of arboreous vegetation and shrubs by using goat pasture in Legnone, Capello and Luserna alps This assessment studied the Pastures of the Legnone, Capello anti Luserna alps (Lesina Valley - Sondrio) during sunmner 2006 and 2007. Three experimental sites, mainly covered Larix decidua, Alnus viridis. Rhododendron ferrugineum, were grazed by 110 goats belonging to the Valgerola breed throughout 2 to 8 days trials. The aim of the research hereof has to verify the possibility to retain the invasion of the shrubs and the growth of woods into the alpine pasture. The period of observation lasted 216 hours, scheduled over 24 days, and performed by one-two researchers observing the behaviour of the grazing goats. The percentage of time dedicated to several activities (grazing, moving, etc.) and the food preferences were evaluated during the experinrental period. The trials aimed at individuating a random selection of 60 Larix decidua, 25 Alnus viridis, 25 Rhododendron ferrugineum. Each plant was mesaured before and after grazing, according lo the following parameters: plants'height and width; branches'length and diameter. Goat grazing turned our as an efficient instrument of mountain livestock utilisation and of land care and maintenance, moreover in order to obtain an efficient control of Alnus viridis.
