The current literature in Environmental Psychology, Medical Geography and Public Health offers growing evidences of a closer link between experiencing nature and positive emotions, optimal cognitive functioning, well-being in general. This paper reviews the main open topics in this field and suggests a new theoretical model, able to connect so far distinguished domains:environmental strategies, flow experiences, attention restoration. Within this framework, places and their positive features may be seen as artefatcts able to promote flow of consciousness (Csikszentmihaly 1975, 1980, 1997) and trascendent experiences. In particular, we suggest that the main theoretical model of the environment well-being relationship (Attention Restoration Theory, Kaplan e Kaplan, 1989; 1995), should be integrated with the optimal experience model (Csikszentmihaly, 1980; 1990) in order to create a more comprehensive framework on the person-environment system. Furthermore, we analyzed groundebreaking social practices like healing, therapeutic and community gardening, to support the model itself and to underline new developmental issues involving urban parks and natural areas.
